Well, this is Bob, WA9BVE. I couldn't resist with Linux and the conversation. I used to work for the University of Washington, and the university, like the Internet at large, the entire infrastructure runs on Linux, not Windows, and there's a reason for that. The university buys probably 10,000 computers a year, maybe a little less than that. probably 5,000 computers a year because they only keep them until the warranty goes out and then they sell them off cheap, which means you can buy a computer cheap from the university if you go down to the surplus. But that means that they're bringing a whole bunch of new computers online all the time. And when you get a new computer, it comes of course loaded with Windows, you have to pay the $150 Windows tax. that version of Windows that's on there is probably six months out of date since they loaded it at the factory. Do you know how long a computer that has a six month out of date version of Windows lasts if you hook it up directly to the Internet? And now, by the way, at the University of the Internet, without any protection, no firewalls, no nothing, runs direct to my, or ran direct to my desktop. Fifteen seconds, and then the computer's trashed. So they had to work up protocols to try to get computers loaded up with the latest version of the operating system so they would survive live on the Internet. In contrast, the computer under my desk, which was running Linux, ran unprotected against the Internet for 15 years without any problems. So that's it. That's my story on Linux.
