The rationale, the rationale behind this was that eating diverts blood flow from muscle to the digestive system, which would cause muscle cramps in the arms and legs leading to drowning. And there's no physiological reason that would happen. The Red Cross Advisory Council found no reported cases of eating before swimming resulting in drowning.
