And to search for these type of collision emissions, scientists look for clusters of dark matter in the center of the Milky Way. Gamma rays of this sort, they're extremely energetic, which would match the annihilation emissions of the hypothetical WIMPs, particularly the frequency of the annihilation. These signals only show up after all other background energetic photons coming from the galaxy center are eliminated. Further studies may need to subtract all the signals to reveal the underlying signal. As it is right now, and no one is placing all their bets that this recent discovery is correct, further analysis needed to completely rule out other things. So when they analyze this a little bit further, and they further analyze the gamma ray signatures, they'll know one way or another whether they've actually, according to the theoretical models, detected directly, I guess at this point, indirectly directly at this point, dark matter.
