I just watched a video on that on YouTube. The guy was in a blinding snowstorm. It was on Lake Ontario. He couldn't see anything. It was all complete whiteout. There was another ship close by, and they were going to this harbor. In order for that ship to get there, he had to go into some shallow water. That's what got him. He probably bottomed out and broke the back of the boat and it sunk. But no one really knows.
