Fire can replicate itself. It doesn't have a boundary. It certainly doesn't have a skin membrane. They're just basically unregulated chemical reactions that produce lots and lots of heat. The next generation of telescopes that are coming up will help better define life. The James Webb Space Telescope, as an example, that will be able to detect weight, gases, and life on exoplanets, which it's doing now. It's looking for those signatures.
