One thing that came to my mind after talking to Gerald was that back when our budgets were very, very short and we wanted to give people Christmas presents, especially outside the family, we defaulted to food. Les was a big candy maker. She'd buy a bunch of chocolate and then she would turn out chocolates for people. My wife and I, we would do caramel corn, which was very cheap to make and very pleasing.
