Planetary highlights for October. October is longer than October across Saturn, while Io and Europa tango together across Jupiter three times. Mercury and Mars make a brief evening appearance and Venus dominates the morning sky. Plus, the fine Orionid meteor shower occurs during the dark of the moon. Excerpt is from Astronomy Magazine, October 25, page 28. The Orionids peaked earlier this morning. And we're going to talk a little bit about that as well. We've got two comets passing by Earth as well. So, during the dark of the moon, so to speak, that's the new moon period. When the moon is setting very, very early in the evening, soon after sunset. So, gives you, the whole moon is dark. So, it gives you a better, much better chance of looking at the night skies for sure. Continuing on with the planet Mercury. We'll be at its greatest eastern elongation, about 24 degrees east of the sun on the 29th, which will mean it is as high as it's going to get in the western sky soon after sunset. Mercury is now setting about 7 p.m. to get out there fairly early to catch Mercury. Mercury was visible about 30 minutes after sunset just above the west horizon. Mercury moves from the constellation of Virgo into Scropius, shining at magnitude minus 0.1 on the 31st.
