So comet 3i-ATLAS was first spotted back in July 2025 on the asteroid terrestrial impact blast alert system, Atlas, a telescope in Chile. And ever since that time, astronomers have been using ground-based and space telescopes to monitor its progress and then try and find out more about it. And based on its trajectory, astronomers suspect that it could be the oldest comet ever observed and it may be 3 billion years older than our solar system, possibly even 4 billion years older than our solar system. Our solar system is already 4.6 billion years old.
