In 1773, that faint nebula, okay, this is October 13th, okay, 1773, while standing for comets, Messier sees this thing. His goal was very practical, but, you know, years later, 70 years later, 1845, this fellow, William Parsons, okay, he was the third Earl of Ross, better known as Lord Ross. He had just built the world's largest telescope at the time. It became known as the Leviathan of Parson Town. This is over in Ireland. With a six-foot wide metal mirror and stone walls to stabilize a massive tube, the Irish-built marvel was the first to reveal a spiral structure in a nebula.
