It looks like a tiny mist among the stars, subtle, almost ghostly, and that's what Charles Messier saw this week, okay, exactly this week. It was this week yesterday in 1773. He cataloged it as what we've come to know as Messier 51, simply noting it was a very faint nebula without stars, okay? The funny thing about that is, you know, he's looking at this as like, hey, this is a nuisance. It's not a comet. It's just this blurry little cloud and he's calling it M51.
