Hubble's discovery of the Cetiad showed up Curtis's argument that Andromeda was a separate galaxy from our own. Hubble went on to measure M31s on several nights over the year. The flickering stars variable of lighten has enabled Hubble to calculate that Andromeda was this huge 900,000 light year away structure.
