The team, they were looking at a gene called MUC19, which plays an important role in the immune system. The group found that humans with indigenous American ancestry were more likely than other populations to carry a variant of this gene that came from Denisovan. This ancient genetic heritage may have helped humans survive new ecosystems in North and South America.
