So these, any depressants, particularly the older ones, tend to work by just increasing the amount of these neurotransmitters being released. But the newer ones, the SSRIs, these are the selective serotonin retake inhibitors, work a little bit differently. They block serotonin from going back into a brain cell, therefore serotonin becomes more available to pass signals between brain cells. So normally, serotonin goes back into the brain cell after carrying a signal between a brain cell. So that's referred to as reuptake. So it interferes with that process. It's set out there, so it's rarely available to send signals right away. So there's no delay, no waiting for it to travel back out of the brain cell.
