So researchers have now set up a combination of ship-based acoustic sensors, remotely operated vehicles, and divers that have to get samples from various sites in the Ross Sea. The bay is about 16 to 790 feet deep, so that's about 4.8 meters to 240 meters deep in the Antarctic Southern Ocean. And so far they have found more than 40 methane leaks, and this was published in Nature Communications this month. Methane at seats in the Antarctic were once thought to be rare, but these studies suggest they are widespread in the region.
