I hate events like that because they dictate the rest of the story. The best ones are the small response optional events like you are walking down a hallway wearing a cloak and somebody comes up behind you and says, that's beautiful. Now you have a choice. You can turn and talk to that person or you can just go on. And because it is a small event there aren't really any negative consequences either way. But if you take the risk and talk to that person you might find yourself down a completely different path. And in fact, in that particular case the person involved ended up being my thesis advisor in graduate school and ended up getting me into graduate school in fact. So I much prefer the small response optional inciting events. And I didn't have one for this book and it was making me crazy. And today it finally hit me what that event had to be. And I think that the shape of an inciting event depends on whose point of view it is from. And that was a little revelation for which I am very grateful.
