W4AKY here. It's funny you bring up this subject tonight. I literally wore the covers off of a 19, I guess, crap, I think it was a 62, A-RRL manual. I kept checking it out of the library for a year and just literally wore the thing off the library and finally asked me if I just wanted to buy the book. I had the thing memorized cover to cover but I didn't know any hams. So consequently I used it more as an electronic reference book. Went through, spent 30 years selling electronic parts, knew every amateur in town, every repeater, every frequency, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Got involved with Civil Air Patrol, was communications officer for the wing here in Kentucky. Still never got my ticket. Ended up spending 10 days in Florida right after Hurricane Michael. Came home, got involved with Kentucky Disaster Relief, KBC, and one of the things in their communications is amateur radio experience helpful. So I ended up getting my amp to help things because of MCOM. Been involved with KBC here in town, although come to find out the need for amateur radio and the need for communications period is waning because of the fact that the local units all have Starlink now. It was before we were using Winnet as a backup when we didn't have network communications to send emails. And so short of handing out radios and assigning them out for the local teams to go out and do tree trimming and roofing and mud outs and things of that nature. This is repeater station communication November, November, November. Hold on a minute, let me reset. Located in Shelton, Washington.
