So why is the ocean getting more difficult? Well, beginning climate change is heating up the ocean. A lot of reasons for this. Atmospheric CO2 levels rise and the sea is warm. The water absorbs more dissolved CO2. The CO2 reacts with seawater, releases hydrogen, triggers a drop of pH. Therefore, the ocean becomes more acidic. Other things, pollutants in the ocean like plastics, the micro and metal plastics, are having chemical reactions within the water and they also produce acidification by lower pH levels. But this is a little bit different. We're talking about something a little bit different here. Most of our hits through the oceans have been slightly alkaline with an average of around 8.1 to 8.2. That's so much of that baking soda. So now it's hovering closer to 8.5 and it doesn't sound like much, but the pH is kind of a logarithmic function.
