Ruby the wonder dog at my feet sleeping away. I too got on the Simplex net this evening and was an experiment. Right now I'm talking to you on my base station which is a 25 watt unit here with a roof mounted vertical, but for the heck of a day I just took my $25 booping 5RM out in the backyard and joined the net to see how far I would get without any repeaters. And somebody got in that darn thing. I don't know how $25 can get you a long way. It's surprising I had a, I think it was a 5 by 8 going into Redmond or something like that.
