A quick tutorial on magnitude. So magnitude scale is an in-first logarithmic scale, meaning that as the magnitude increase, the relative brightness of an object decreases by a factor of about 2.5. The best that there was a dimness object that the human eye can see is about 6 magnitude. So a magnitude 5 object is 2 and a half times brighter than a magnitude 6 object, 12 magnitude 7 object is 2 and a half times different.
