You pay a renewal fee once a year for your unlimited SIM card and your opt-out erases. You can take it anywhere with you in 34 countries. You just turn it on. It links to the closest cell network. It doesn't matter which company it uses all of them and you pretty much always get a signal with it. Now I understand in an emergency situation it does rely on cell towers and you know internet infrastructure but other than that I mean it's you know in good times this is a great way to communicate in my opinion. I've only ever lost signal on it once since I've had it.
