A spacecraft is being thought about, no longer larger than a gram, and it could visit a nearby black hole in its next century, and powered by lasers on Earth, powered to about a third the speed of light. There's a blueprint, and it was published on the 7th in the Journal of Science by the astrophysicist Cosimo Bambi at the Tugun University in Shanghai. And the craft is based on technologies that haven't been invented yet, and will rely on, actually before they can even build this, they also have technology that can locate a black hole close enough to Earth to make the trip worthwhile. And some of the more sensitive technologies out there for detecting gravitational waves, the new generation of those will be able to pick up some of these smaller black holes, and we can be something even much closer to Earth than what they've now discovered. So getting a spacecraft to a black hole depends on finding one close enough to Earth. The closest one right now is about 1,500 light-years away, and that's way too far to descend present day. So that's a rocket technology. Anything further than 50 light-years will make Bambi's mission impossible. If a black hole 25 light-years away should be discovered, that could be a feasible target. A gravitational lens is probably the best at locating any nearby smaller black hole.
