It was initiated in 1970 and continues weekly programming during the NFL season. It was broadcast by ABC at the beginning. The NFL envisioned moving some of the games from traditional Sunday games to increased viewership, as well as fans excitement for the game by highlighting a game a week. It was a challenge to do this without taxing the players too much, and Monday Night was agreed upon. The hosts for the very few, sorry, the hosts for the first few years were Howard Gosell, the then recently retiring Dallas Cowboy quarterback, Don Merneth, and Frank Gifford. Good job, sir.
