We went to see the U505, which is a German submarine, early German submarine, that's in a Chicago museum. And the thing that got me, and I just did not understand it, is they had a lot of trouble with heat. It was way warmer than you'd want it to be. To be in a steel cigar tube, you know, 100 feet under the water, and they couldn't dump the heat fast enough. So to save space from sleeping areas, everybody doubled up. And so you were on duty, and then somebody was sleeping on your rack. And when you got off duty, you got into the rack. Unfortunately, they'd been sweating the whole time. So your mattress was soaked in sweat. It wasn't until many years later, it would be electro boats, or several years later.
