A quick tutorial on magnitude. The magnitude scale is an inverse logarithmic scale, meaning as the magnitude increase in scale. The apparent brightness of an object decreases by a factor of about 2.5. The dimness object is that you and I can see under optimal conditions. It is about 6 magnitude. So a magnitude 5 object is 2.5 times brighter than a magnitude 6 option. A magnitude 7 object is 2.5 times different. It is set up so that every 5 magnitude is a 100 times difference in brightness for comparison. If you live in inner near big cities about the best you can do is about 4th magnitude with the naked eye.
