It's always been assumed that the speed of light is constant and that it forms a basis of a lot of physics theory. In fact, it plays a pivotal role in various models of what occurred seconds after the big bang. And the theory states that the speed of light could have been variable and this proved to be a rather radical proposition when it came out. If it were proven true, that would mean that the laws of nature would not cause it, well, not as constant as they are today. So I think... Yes, I know. I think I said that speed of light is constant, but... The structure of the universe, like you said, they have a theory of reasoning, especially the speed of light can be variable. It would be tiny differences with density from one place to another.
