It squeezes, these gravitational waves, they squeeze and stretch the space in anything that's in their way. And so by setting a beam of light down the arms of the apparatus, the difference between gravitational wave interaction and what's going on, the legal arm and rest, surely it's had their way. So you've got some mirrors there and you have a laser and you're bouncing it off these mirrors that are on both of these arms. And when the gravitational wave comes in, it compresses their scratches, one of those arms. You look at the time difference between that and the one that's having them scratched and then you know that something's happened and that would have been a gravitational wave without the apparatus.
