I think today I consider picking strawberries for kids is like child labor. I don't think they, I don't know if they're not the kids picking strawberries anymore. It's a different world out there. But my brother, my, yeah, my guard works at the school. I work at the school. I'm a little bit of a kid. I'm not too hot today. I think just maybe in the 70s. But my brother, my, yeah, my guard works at Gresham Berry Growers. Up towards Gresham which is about 12 miles east of Portland. A lot of berry fields back in those days. And he works at the flavor factory there, Henry. And so when I was 16 I think I had to work for a minute. Went out there, I was like a junior in high school. And I made, I think my first check was like $80. I couldn't believe it, you know. I was rich. I've never seen that kind of money. But it was a union, a pension union. They paid a buck 75 an hour in 1958. So that was, it was kind of a summer job. So I did that a couple summers. I went to work for a department store down in Portland, Myer and Frank. Big department store. And I think it paid a dollar an hour. So when June came, that was kind of a winter job. When June came I knew I could go back to the cannery at a buck 75. So I quit Myer and Frank and went back to the cannery. So my brother told me that they'd come out and ask for seniority. I don't have any years of work there. Because I had none at first. But my brother told me just stand around and everybody leaves. There'd be like 15 or 20 guys or whatever. And he would pick people with the most seniority. And quite often I'd hang around for a half hour or so. I don't know why I remember the guy's name was Adolf. Big old German guy. And he'd come to work and I'd get quite a bit of work that way. Oh boy, I'm going to win on my car. Sorry. And I saved $300. I guess I bought my first car. 49th Ford. I paid $150 for this used car. And $150 for insurance. I had a car my senior year in high school. So that's it, my story. I'm sticking to it. KV7PEW.
