in order to put the country together and to keep them together, they had to make some concessions to the southern states who were quite heavily dependent on slave labor, but they wrote into the Constitution a way out to eventually write that wrong, but they knew that in order to start and to keep this country going that they had to make those concessions. And so that's one of the beautiful things about the Constitution is that it was designed in such a way that it could be changed.
