It's a smart current sensor that also determines what the battery temperature is, what the battery voltage is, and essentially how much power has gone into the battery and how much power has gone out of the battery. It allows the computer onboard your vehicle, if you have a modern vehicle, to control a lot of things, but also to maximize the charging rate for the battery, not overcharge the battery, just charge the battery appropriately, which maximizes fuel efficiency when you figure a million cars out there saving maybe a tenth of a gallon per mile.
