This is this exercise of figuring out how these single letter abbreviations were derived. It's sort of similar to another one which I set my fifth graders which is, can you look at the list of states and their abbreviations and figure out how that set of two letter abbreviations was derived? And sometimes when I have a long time, too much time on my hands, I will write out both of those sets of rules. They're kind of fun puzzles to work out. Okay, so now you can say, oh, poor Anne, she has way too much time on her hands. But if you ever had to memorize that table of single letter amino acid abbreviations, which I did in undergraduate school actually, you would find a way to memorize them pretty quickly.
