This chemistry, nothing to do with their side chains, nothing to do with how they interact, nothing like that. What they have in common is that their single letter abbreviations are derived phonetically. So arginine is abbreviated with an R for its single letter code and phenylalanine, which is spelled P-H-E-N-Y-L. Or NY, phenylalanine, amionine, I can't spell it. Anyway, it's got a P-H. It's abbreviated with the letter F. And the reason those came out that way is because by the time you get through following the rules by which the other abbreviations were derived, there was nothing left to do with those to accept to give them phonetic abbreviations.
