You know, starting a vertical antenna at $400 or $500 is inaccurate. You can make a vertical antenna for about $40 worth of equipment. You get a collapsing fishing pole and then you cover it with, you take the segments apart, cover it all with aluminum tape, wrap it around it to make it coil, you know, near the base. Stick that on a spike, shove it in the ground. You can use like, a Barret A cloth that people use to, I don't know, wrap their heads to keep the Wi-Fi out. You can use that on the ground for a ground plane and you can spread out wires for a ground plane. And you've got a perfectly functional vertical antenna that will make contacts around the world.
