I've never done this myself outside of broadcast FM tuning off frequency and just listening in the static. But for hands, the lower VHF territory, 6 meters is popular around 50.26. Using MSK 144, again, do some research there. You can actually listen to meteor showers with your radio. Also passive SDR listening turned up in my research. But I will say if you're just in the broadcast bands, you can just go off frequencies. You're not in the middle of some transmissions from someplace. You can hear in the static sometimes stuff popping through. I tried that as a kid when guided by a talk show host and you're able to hear some stuff. So anyway...
