The astronauts didn't just visit them when they left behind some cool instruments for continued research, stuff like seismometers, magnetometers, solar wind collectors, heat flow probes, particle detectors, and laser reflectors and the like. So let's begin a lot of cool stuff. In a very real sense, they turned the moon into a lunar scientific outpost. For tonight, I'll focus on the seismometer listening devices to relate the story from tomorrow 51 years ago. They placed directly on the surface these seismometers, and their job was to detect moon quakes, impacts, vibrations, and anything else that could tell us what the moon was really like beneath the dust and the rocks.
