from other animals as far as our observations can tell. So what is a prairie dog? Well, prairie dogs, they're highly social, burrowing ground squirrels that are native to the grasslands of North America. And despite being called a prairie dog, they're not dogs at all, right? They're rodent squirrels are part of the rodent family and they're part of the squirrel family. And the moniker, prairie dog, actually comes from their warning call, which sounds like a sharp dog's bike, a bark. So they make these yip and yaw sounds and some other things. And if you've never seen a prairie dog, they're somewhere on the order of about 30 centimeters to maybe about 50 centimeters in length. And they weigh anywhere from one to three pounds.
