Well because I started when I was a kid and my father was a ham, my uncle was a ham, my brother was a ham, my older brother so I like to say I came to it genetically. And I was technically the least smart of the whole bunch but I was the best at the code. And I was studying music at the same time as I was learning code so and it's a lot of the same parts of the brain as far as timing and pitch and interpreting rhythm patterns. You know so and I still play music all the time too so I was away from it a long time at both periods as I'm away from ham radio and then I came back. And so now I live in a little apartment house where I can't have any kind of an antenna. So and I got re-licensed about a year ago through a friend of mine that's still an active ham and he's a buddy of mine around here, we drink a couple beers together now and then. And I found out about Echolink first and I've been on this now for a year. But then I found out about this remote ham system which is a software suite with a free download and I have the client software and I can connect to a remote ham rig and I can get on HS. And again to my friend that's here introduced me to a guy that's got five of these remote stations down in New Hampshire and on various frequencies and bands and different kinds of transceivers. So I could get on a 75 meter side band with some buddies around here and then I can get on 80, 40, 20, 30, 15 and 10 meters CW and I've been doing a little bit of that every day I really enjoy it. And I've been talking all over the world on CW so mostly stateside stuff. And everyone I talk to is 70 or 75 or 80 or 85 years old. Most of the good CW operators are old guys but any young person that's at all interested in it we encourage them to learn it. It's not necessary but it's not completely obsolete and if you enjoy doing it it's worth doing it. So back to you Jerry AG7IK K1KFC."},{"callsign_confidence":0.94,"confidence":null,"created_at":"2025-12-21T11:28:18+00:00","id":80582,"node_number":"oldsys","recording_id":80581,"text":" K1KFC in Belfast, Maine."},{"callsign_confidence":1.0,"confidence":null,"created_at":"2025-12-22T01:33:32+00:00","id":83090,"node_number":"oldsys","recording_id":83089,"text":"AG79K and K1KFC. Well, that's very interesting and a lot of it I don't understand. I've never used the IRLP network. The only of the digital networks that are linked together in systems like we're using right now that I've used is the Echo Link and I'm using it on my phone and it was it was really the first thing I was able to get on the air with as a new ham back a year ago in November. So it's just exactly a year since I've been back on. And but then I discovered the remote hams. And that's been taking more of my time. But tonight, for some reason, I just felt like looking around here and then having a few good contacts. Yeah, it's a real thrill to go out in the open, out in the field. I haven't done a lot of that. I did when I was a kid living in New Jersey. My first time around as a ham, there was a radio club that my father and I joined. And we would go out. We'd do a field day a couple years in a row. And we went up to a place called High Point, New Jersey, which is up at the northeast corner of New Jersey connecting to Pennsylvania and New York State. And we set up a station and had generators, gasoline generators, and I was a designated kid CW operator, and I sat up all night and made a bunch of contacts on HF bands. And so now, the only thing I do now is I don't have a car. I don't drive a car anymore. I can still drive. I have a license, but I cannot afford to own a car. I'm a pretty low-end financial guy, but I don't need anything, so I'm not pleading poverty. So I ride around on a three wheel recumbent e-bike all summer, and really spring and fall and summer. And it's a great little town to be around on. I get right down by the shore, by the Atlantic Ocean. And so I got a little handheld. One of my buddies around here gave me one of these BaoFang VHF, UHF handheld radios. And I take that with me, and I'll sit down on the seashore and make a couple contacts and hit some repeaters around here. But I've never really gone portable in my adult life with HF rig, and I'd like to try to figure out a way to do that. So maybe next summer I'll be doing some of that. Back to you, Jerry. AG7IK, K1KFC. Kilo Kilo 7, November, Quebec, November. All Star Node 6222, located in Shelton, Washington. The XYL called and knocked me off there for a minute, but I lost most of that, but the Valfang is a good little radio for if all you need to do is hit the repeater. In fact, I bought the $250 fancy handheld and I sold it because my $35 Valfang did exactly what I needed it to do. I even took a dip in the canal and still managed to do alright. I'm going to have to go here, David. I hope I'm still getting through and we'll catch up with you a little bit later. I just had cataract surgery yesterday on one eye, my first eye, and it's amazing how much better I can see already, and I just had a checkup this morning for that. I listen now and then, and I don't check in that often. I heard the discussion a few minutes ago, one of the gentlemen was talking about the repeater couldn't get connected to the internet. And I just read in the New York Times here a half hour or so ago that there was an outage on Cloudflare, which affected quite a number of different web services. Well, I'm in between, I guess. I'm an old guy, 77. I've been a ham since I was 13. There was a period of time in my late 30s and 40s when I was very interested in astronomy. And I built a couple of telescopes. And one in particular, this is what kept me listening, is I have still all the parts for an 8-inch Newtonian reflector, including a mirror that I ground and polished myself. I no longer have a tube, but I have these parts on this mirror, which I would happily give to someone that wanted to restore it and make a usable telescope out of it. And I've made a couple of notes about your website, and I'm going to contact you later. And I'll send you some pictures of this gear and make it available to any, particularly a young person who'd like to own an ice scope, I think it could be restored. The mirror needs recoating. But anyway, that's my main interest. Nowadays, my primary interests are music and ham radio. So thanks for letting me in the group. And I'll be listening for a while. Off and on for a few years through All Star, but now with the Sky Hub Link system, it is definitely global one way or another as well. Let's see. Also, yes, check out the IAAS website. It is a youth group. If you've got the parts, I think we've got the tubes. Uh, there's Jim, N0COT, uh, founder, actually, check all that out to get something from you there, David, for sure, and I'm sure there's, uh, some interesting parties here as well, who knows.
