I was able to talk to my wife using a digital mode C4FM from 50 watts on C4FM digital from my antenna at home which is 50 foot plus the 17 foot of the antenna, it's a GP9 by Comet and we were able to get a crystal clear C4FM signal for over 30 miles in pouring rain and I didn't die, I just, I keep talking about the C4FM digital technology and it is absolutely incredible and I just can't get over the ACRS and I need to make a connection over 2,000 miles with the digital repeater is unbelievable and I'm really loving it. The radio goes up into the sky into a passing satellite, goes across the third ocean view and the reverse trip down to your QTH. I'm running a 10-wood Tango Romeo 7-7-30 somewhat QRP or like tan, quite a bit more than I need and they bring some full short bands out of critical of about a meter or so in a vertical length, about a lot more than I can. Over. Oh, sounds like you got a blue antenna going, that sounds like a good one. This thing has got something similar to a GP3, it's about a, you know, a GP3 is a one meter, not one meter long, it's a high gain vertical and set up by a comet as well but it doesn't require a ground plane so it's nice, it's pretty cool, you have to push those little ground plane things in there. I don't know what the reason is for it but I'm able to receive air bands, I'm able to transmit on the 220 and, not me for 220 units but I got such a good SWR that I can transmit on the 220 frequency line and of course 270 centimeters on my mobile unit in my car that's a YASEN 510D and that, I'll tell you that radio right there, I'm in love with that radio, especially with the C4SM, the digital mode that it has and the system as well. It's really cool and I really enjoy the antenna because I bought the MOSIUS engineering, I can't remember the name but it's one of the top model GMRS, it's a week off from the next engineering, let me bring it for a second. My Dango Romeo 7730 is a very cheap 1970s model, it's a Dango Romeo 7730 running SM and seems to get the job done. What have you got through to you or you got through to me so I'm not sure you're doing something right. Yes, for brand names, YASEN is a very cheap brand, I've used SU equipment, the T-word equipment and also ICOM. I'm not too worried about the brand name, I've thought about brand royalty, it's just can I buy it second hand or does it check and does it work and those are the measuring tape that I use to get the signal out, it must be doing something right. Back to you in Hollywood there, ZLPC HCR in South Vanita, New Zealand. This is KU4, with 2LZ, HCR, Charlie Hotel, Alpha Romeo in Australia. I don't want to hold you up from doing whatever you're doing or have been planning to play radio for a while, that's cool. The sun is beginning to set so we want to get outside and get where we can have that window in between the sun setting and the sun fully set so we're not getting bit by mosquitoes, this is cool, we can get this thing up. I appreciate you getting us out, it's been a pleasure and nice to meet you, I'm sure definitely we will talk again many times again on the logs and I just want to say you have a wonderful rest of your day, what time is it there, I'm not sure, but morning, evening, whatever it is, enjoy the rest of it and fulfil the best of it and set my wishes about 73 from KU4, UPCA in Hollywood, Florida. Got a bit of pencil and paper out here and kind of write down your course line because I've got a hint on the frequency slide covering most of the cargo, that's the problem, which is a bit like a smaller version of a state. We've got KU4 and just the last bit of your course line there, by the way it's just come up past 5 to 10 in the morning and I've got a wash load, I was about 5 or 10 minutes or a bit of cycle where to go and then that goes on the wash line, so I'm mid-morning, New Zealand time or TV time. Ok, I will definitely, I'm going to write down that too, so it's 10 in the morning there, it's 10 am there and it's 10 pm, ok so I've got 10 minutes now, so call sign is kilo, Quebec 4, uniform, proper kilo, that's kilo Quebec 4, uniform, proper kilo and one more time KU4, UPCA, the name's Chris and it's sunny sunny Hollywood, Florida. Oh man, it's been a great talk and I hope we chat again soon. Roger, you said uniform, upper kilo and you said UPCA, so just get a verification of that course line, over. One more time, it's probably me because I do have a list in my voice, so it's, how am I going to say it, non-phonetically, KU4, UPCA, that's KU4, UPCA. Roger, I got that the second time, yep UPCA, by the way, your comment's about 220 megahertz bands, we don't have that band available to us in New Zealand, we are Region 3 and I think you are Region 2 I think, yeah, so yep, we just do what we can with our limited to a thousand watts, that's it. Just in the last few years, it used to be a hundred and fifty watts, so yeah, we just try to do a little with a watt and that can make your acquaintance and yeah, enjoy that lovely weather and watch the thunder and the winds or something and the platforms down the telephone edge."},{"callsign_confidence":0.8200000000000001,"confidence":0.7927422927958625,"created_at":"2026-06-28T18:04:09.698403+00:00","id":128916,"node_number":"683210","recording_id":129077,"text":"Now the only digital world that I've tried, Michael, is C4FM. So it's a little easier to take. But moving on to happier news, we've discovered that we have a kitten, because of the furball report, that at least one of our kittens is now capable of jumping up on windowsills. And we normally leave this window open so the cats can come in and out, at least when the weather's nice. So we can't do that no more, because it's not ready for kittens to go outside and explore the world out there. They're too easy to nibble by the little predators that we have running around our outside. So that was a shocking find this morning. The little guy is actually a really good jumper. What he does is he jumps up on the water dish, which has a little one gallon bottle on top of it. And then he jumps up onto the water dish. And then he jumps up onto the windowsill. And it's not going to take long for the other ones to figure out how he did what he did and how to do it themselves. So we had to shut our cat door for the season. And then, I don't know if I mentioned it yesterday or not, but I pulled the trigger, ordered myself a new radio. And here shortly, Giga Parts will be sending me a Yaesu FTM 310 RASP. It's got the C4 FM. It's almost like the 150, except for the digital side of it has been added. And I'm kind of glad I missed the previous generation radios with that big, giant dial on them. I just think they kind of look goofy. And I like this generation where they have controls for both sides. And they're smaller and whatnot, more like the FTM 100 was. There is lots to learn and I'm still learning after, God knows what, 50 years or so. There's always something new and something new comes up, especially the fellows that are really well into it. They'll come up with all this new stuff like the C4 FM and so on. And obviously I've got to start picking up on all those sort of things. But yeah, no, it's a very informal area here. Everybody's a friend and everybody's welcome. This is repeater station kilo kilo seven. Sorry if I confused you Ben. I was, radio wise, I started off back in 1976. So I've been on there for a long time. I still have the TS 520S Kenwood and with all those extra bits and pieces that come with it that you can get, that was working really well. It even works today. However, I ended up buying the AIC991A because I wanted to experiment a bit more with this C4 FM and so on, see how that works out. But there you are, I'm not sure what it cost. As you said, if our dollar's slightly better than yours, so I think it was about $2,000 in our money, in Australian money. So what's that probably 22 in your money over there? Still not so bad. It's a reasonably good set. We did pick up you guys on FQ8 from about 7 GMT onwards till about 8.30 and then it seems to drop out after that on 20 metres. Anyway, that's the story you sent. I wonder what you've been doing for your living over there. I noticed you're talking about having jobs for the people applying for many jobs with your boss and so on. Over. I'm a brand new ham. I got my license this spring. So I'm still learning a lot. That's why I broke down and bought an FDX10 right away because it covers all the bands, all the modes. So I've got a chance to learn everything. For work, I work for a home medical equipment company. We do deliveries and installations of doctor ordered or therapist ordered home medical equipment. I do that three days a week. The other two days I deliver liquid oxygen to residents, to old age homes and hospitals. That's for anybody who needs oxygen therapy at 6 litres a minute or more at rest. We cover a great big area of northern Ontario, northeast Ontario. So I drive. Tomorrow I'm probably looking at about 600 kilometres of driving. I'll do probably 10 to 12 calls along the way. I spend a lot of time on the radio or on the road. I started taking a handheld with me. With the repeater book I programmed in. Every repeater I could find on my routes and I try and hit the repeater, see if anybody's around while I'm driving. So far it's pretty dead up here. Nobody's much on the repeaters. So it is what it is. I'm learning as much as I can about ham radio and antennas. I was a technician in the Air Force for a while and it helped me get my base. But it's a whole brand new world once you start playing in the ham world."},{"callsign_confidence":1.0,"confidence":null,"created_at":"2025-10-14T19:21:54+00:00","id":60645,"node_number":"oldsys","recording_id":60644,"text":" Yeah, I can't remember what that was. I mean, it's crazy. Now, so on the mic you can do C4FM, DMR, D-Star, All-Star, Echo Link. Oh geez, I know I'm missing a couple, but D-Star, yeah, all that. It's crazy. So definitely not hard to find a spot to go to to talk to somebody, or you can always do the whole DMR private call. So yeah, there's all kinds of places to go. We have a ham fest tomorrow, possibly the last one of the season up here in Pennsylvania, maybe in the state capital Harrisburg tomorrow, 0600 local to 11 o'clock local. And meeting up with one of the other regional hams here that keeps track of the repeaters on our Seabridge DMR system up here. And I think he's going to give me a whole bunch of vinyl records so that'll increase my relatively new record collection. So needless to say I'll be quite busy getting that delicious vinyl. So there we go. With that, send it back to Net Control. By the way, Graham, thank you for checking in last night on EPA Cross Mode there on 31425. Good to hear you last night. I know kind of late for you with those nets that I run here in the evening, but it's always nice to hear you in there from across the pond. Back over to Net Control, KB3 GPX. Well, very good, Mike. Hey, listen, it was a pleasure to check into the net last night, but I don't think everybody was hearing everybody else. I don't even know if Net Control was actually hearing me. I don't know if you're relaying to him that I checked in and said something. I'm not too sure, but yeah. I think if it is a Wednesday night as well, there's something and whenever I make the connection there, it seems to be much better. Everything kind of works quite smoothly. But if I use the YSF to DMR connections, I could hear everybody, but I don't think everybody could hear me. I don't think everybody could hear others as well. So hey, listen, digital. Honestly, Mike, I mean, I love operating digital DMR and the YSF C4FM and everything. I really do, but it still confuses me so much. All the various kind of things that can happen, the various configurations, things work, things don't work, things time out, things... Hey, listen, it's so, so confusing at times, but I still enjoy just filing up the digital hotspot and doing my best. I've got a couple of local repeaters that are connected to digital as well. And we try working through them from time to time, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. But it's always good fun. It's amateur radio. We're trying to make connections, and when you do, you just celebrate it. That's absolutely wonderful. So anyway, thank you so much, Mike. And the Handfest tomorrow, well, I hope you have a fantastic day. Now, going by a conversation earlier, I might be wrong, but there's also the SCEU Worldwide SSB contest, SSB leg this weekend. Maybe not that wrong, maybe picked it up wrong, but is that all kind of bad timing? If you've got a Handfest at the same weekend when there's the SCEU Worldwide SSB contest, maybe I got that wrong. I'm not too sure. I'm just going by a conversation earlier. But anyway, Mike, it's always a pleasure to hear from you, sir. And you're sounding great coming through from Zillow and there on the ZMR side of things. So that's absolutely wonderful. KB3GPX and Mike, if you care to share about anything else that you operate on there in Pennsylvania, the way in which people could connect, please feel free. No problem at all. Mike, back to you, sir."},{"callsign_confidence":0.8200000000000001,"confidence":null,"created_at":"2025-10-31T13:59:56+00:00","id":73184,"node_number":"oldsys","recording_id":73183,"text":" Well, Mike, thank you. Thank you so much for taking time to stop by. I really do appreciate that. Thank goodness for Echo Link. You always have Echo Link when everything else fails. Always, always good for a backup, that's for sure. I'm kind of in the same boat. I've done some digital stuff for ... I think I've got myself my head around the digital ... The issue system, C4FM, wires, X's and that. I think I've got my head around all that. It seems to be pretty straightforward. Of course, I have had the Anytone 878UV2 Plus and everything else for some time now. When I try it, things still happen. I can hear people and they can't hear me and different bits and pieces. Then they listen to something, then they get switched over to something else, all these different things. It's just a little bit more of a learning curve. Just have to spend more time on it, I think. But I'm the same. Had it for a long time and it's so much of a mystery. So many things, so much of a mystery, that's for sure. But anyway, Mike, we'll just keep on plugging away and learning together. I'm sure we'll get there, that's for sure. I often fail trying to make digital connections with the Anytone. Let's go back to my ACU radio, do YSF to DMR in the hotspot. It's so much easier to me anyway. Mike, thank you. I was going to ask about your wife Jane there and how her wrist was doing with her arm. I know that you had that accident some weeks ago now with Bertie there. Sorry to hear that you had to have her wrist or arm rewired about a week ago. So like I say, I was going to ask him and thanks for the report there. So I'll send our best to myself and Helen, lots of love and hopefully she'll recover very, very soon. And five business on Bertie, seven months old. Our only audience turned six months old yesterday. We're having so much fun as well as the other stuff as well. Anyway, back to you Mike for anything else. Yeah it's an Anytone 868 I've got. I had a Retevis RT3 and the hotspot is an open spot. The original and genuine kind of thing, the very, very first one which has been running constantly. But yeah and fine on the Yaesu C4 FM. Yeah that's a little bit less impenetrable. But I find I don't know whether it's a fault of the open spot one or something like that but the audio sounds like a bee in a jam jar. So I tend not to use it unfortunately. And I can't find a way to connect via D-Star because I have a, D-Star was my first foray into Internet Linked Radio and I have an ID51 and I keep thinking well maybe I'll use that but it doesn't get used enough and it's a good little radio actually and D-Star I find it's similar in its level of understandability to the Yaesu C4 FM. Easier for me because it was the first thing I had. But GMR it's like well hey. You know I kind of know how Sudoku works but encrypted crosswords but you know I'm happy to leave them to other people. G7MBH thank you for running the net and have a great evening."},{"callsign_confidence":0.8200000000000001,"confidence":null,"created_at":"2025-12-21T23:28:12+00:00","id":82687,"node_number":"oldsys","recording_id":82686,"text":"Sure. On the website w5sc.org, they say, the communication protocol enables devices to analyze an incoming signal and automatically determine if it is using C4FM or conventional FM mode. This was intended to simplify migration of the existing amateur radio repeaters from analog to digital technology. That's apparently what Google says it is."},{"callsign_confidence":0.8200000000000001,"confidence":0.8489768870174885,"created_at":"2026-06-16T15:56:24.826954+00:00","id":108164,"node_number":"683210","recording_id":108163,"text":"just get along. You know, you look at this and it's just pure marketing. It's not what's best for amateur radio. You know, it's I'm gonna put my little twist on this and we are gonna sell radios. You know, now we've come out with the new version of C4 FM and and the only everybody's going, oh are you updating your videos to facilitate this and oh hey the new DR3X is out, you're gonna upgrade. Boy, if they offer a DMR3X at $700 again, yes I will. You know when the DR3X was announced I saw that and I said, oh I bet it has ASP and I bet it has ASP to make it sound kind of digital and analog and then people will go, oh hey we should just use digital because it sounds better. The other thing is, I'd like to let you know of another met, the TransCanadaNet. It's on C4FM. If you don't already know, it's held every once that they have nine o'clock Eastern, six o'clock R time.
